CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Tony Sanchez hit two home runs, including a grand slam to help Boston College (26-27, 9-21 ACC) defeat Wake Forest (24-29, 13-16 ACC), 11-7, in the season finale on Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
Sanchez went 3-for-4 with two homers, six RBIs and three runs scored. The two home runs and six RBIs in a game mark career highs for the sophomore catcher.
Freshman Mickey Wiswall had a three-hit day at the plate, including a double, while sophomore Michael Belfiore collected a hit and scored three runs. Eric Campbell added a homer, a three-run shot, his sixth of the season.
Seniors Brandon Ziemann and Ryan Akel each contributed in their final game at the Heights. Ziemann went 2-for-4 with a run scored and Akel chipped in with a double.
James MacDonald (4-7) earned the victory for the Eagles. The junior right-hander worked the first five innings and collected two strikeouts.
Seniors Steven Cadoret and Nick Asselin each pitched two innings to help preserve the win. Asselin picked up his second save of the season and made his team-high 24th appearance.
The Demon Deacons struck first as they scored three runs off four hits in the top half of the first. Mike Murray lined a RBI double and would later score on a single by Dustin Hood. Andy Goff would knock in Hood on a RBI single to give Wake Forest the early advantage.
In the bottom half of the first the Eagles answered right back with three runs. After Brad Kledzik retired the leadoff batter, he hit consecutive batters. Cleanup hitter Eric Campbell tied the score, 3-3, with a three-run blast to left field.
Willy Fox laced a two-out RBI double in the second to retake the lead for the Demon Deacons, 4-3.
In the fourth, the Eagles knotted the score, 4-4. Akel smacked a double to left-center field. He would score on a single to center by Garret Smith to even the score.
Belfiore led off the fifth inning with a single to left field. Sanchez followed with two-run homer to right-center field to give the Eagles its first lead of the game, 6-4.
Wake Forest added a run in the top of the seventh when Cadoret hit Allan Dykstra with the bases loaded. Cadoret escaped without further damage by enticing Murray to fly out to center field to end the inning.
BC exploded for five runs in the eighth to break the game open. After Wake Forest reliever Phil Negus struck out the first two batters, Smith drew a walk. Ziemann and Barry Butera hit back-to-back singles to tack on a run and make the score, 7-5. After Belfiore walked, Sanchez hit a grand slam to left-center field on the first pitch from Negus to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
The Demon Deacons added a run in the ninth on a Dykstra RBI single, to make the final score, 11-7.
