CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College (25-26, 8-20 ACC) dropped the first game of the three-game series against Wake Forest (23-28, 12-15 ACC), 10-3, on Thursday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
Dan Houston (3-4) worked into the fifth inning before being pulled in favor of John Leonard. The right-hander worked 4+ innings and allowed eight runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. Leonard tossed three innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Kurt Hayer and Kevin Moran each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen for the Eagles' staff.
Wake Forest starter Ben Hunter (4-5) kept the BC bats at bay for the first seven innings. The righty allowed two earned runs on three hits with eight strikeouts.
The BC offense was led by freshman Mickey Wiswall. The designated hitter hit a double, scored a run and added a RBI. Marc Perdios collected a single and RBI, while Michael Belfiore, Eric Campbell and Ryan Akel each chipped with a base knock.
The Demon Deacons pushed across two runs in the top of the first against Houston. Ben Terry led off the game with a walk, and would come around and score on a triple to the left-center field gap by Willy Fox. After Allan Dykstra was hit by a pitch, Houston enticed a double play by Mike Murray. Fox scored on a play to give Wake Forest an early 2-0 lead.
The Eagles answered right back in the bottom half of the first with a run against Hunter. Leadoff hitter Barry Butera drew a walk. After a single by Belfiore put BC base runners on the corners, Tony Sanchez hit a sac fly to left to plate Butera and make the score, 2-1, in favor of Wake Forest.
Andy Goff hit a two-out solo homer to left field on a full count to take a 3-1 advantage.
Wake Forest added a run in the third on a RBI single by Murray.
In the fifth, the Demon Deacons broke the game open and knocked out Houston by scoring four runs and added two more runs in the sixth.
BC added a run in the seventh when Perdios drew a bases loaded walk. Hunter escaped the Eagles' threat when Butera flew out to center field to spoil the rally.
Wiswall hit a sac fly in the eighth to drive in Sanchez to round out the scoring on the afternoon.
The second game of the three-game series between the Eagles and Demon Deacons is scheduled for tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Commander Shea Field.
