CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Eric Campbell had three extra-base hits and four RBIs to help Boston College (25-25) come from behind and defeat Connecticut (24-28), 11-9, on Tuesday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
The Eagles trailed 8-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth, but the BC bullpen held the Huskies lineup to one run in final five frames. BC scored a run in the fourth, two runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to earn the come-from-behind victory.
Campbell went 3-for-5 at the dish with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs to lead the offense.
Leadoff hitter Barry Butera reached base in all six plate appearances. The sophomore collected two hits, two RBIs, walked twice and was hit by a pitch twice. He also scored three runs. Harry Darling went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and two walks.
Both teams used a total of 12 pitchers, six from each staff. Nick Asselin (2-1) picked up the victory for the Eagles. The senior pitched a scoreless seventh inning and had two punch outs. Michael Belfiore pitched the final 1.1 innings with two strikeouts to earn his eighth save of the year.
The Huskies scored two runs on three hits in the top of the first against starter Ted Ratliff to take the early lead. Elliott Glynn started the rally with a double down the left-field line. Mike Olt laced a double off the right field fence to play Glynn. Olt would score on a single to shortstop by Mike Nemeth.
In the second, UConn pushed across a run without the use of hit. Peter Fatse drew a one-out walk. He would steal second, and would later score on a fielding error to give the Huskies the 3-0 advantage.
The Eagles strung together three consecutive hits to plate two runs in the bottom of the second. Darling knocked a base hit through the right side to start the rally. Marc Perdios followed with a double off the left field wall to put two Eagles in scoring position. Butera lined a base hit to right to score two runs and make the score, 3-2.
UConn added two more runs in the third to chase Ratliff from the game. Pat Mahoney who walked earlier in the inning, scored on an error. Neemeth scored on a sac fly by Brad Olt to increase the Huskies lead, 5-2.
BC added two runs in the bottom of the third. Tony Sanchez walked to start the frame. After Sanchez stole second, he would score on a double by Mickey Wiswall in the left-center field gap. Second baseman Matt Hamlet lined a base hit to center to score Wiswall to make the score 5-4 in favor of UConn.
The Huskies tacked on three more runs in the fourth to extend the lead, 8-4.
Eric Campbell collected a RBI double in the fourth to plate Butera to make the score, 8-5.
In the sixth, the Eagles cut the deficit to one run, when they added two more runs. Butera singled and would come around and score on a two-out triple by Campbell. A passed ball allowed Campbell to dart home for the second run of the inning.
The Eagles scored four times and only registered one hit in the bottom of the seventh frame. Dennis Accomando (1-1) entered the game out of the Huskies' bullpen and struggled with his control. Hamlet started the scoring outburst by drawing a walk. Pinch-hitter Robert Anston attempted to sacrifice Hamlet to second, but he was retired at second base for the first out. After Darling walked, and Perdios lined out, Butera was hit by a pitch to load the bases, which then knocked Accomando out of the game. Belfiore drew a walk to plate Anston and tie the score against Will Musson. Sanchez followed by hitting by a pitch to score Darling. Campbell lined a double to left field to score two more runs and give BC the lead, 11-8.
UConn added a run in the eighth on a RBI ground out by Mike Olt to round out the scoring on the afternoon.
BC is back on the diamond on Thursday at 1 p.m. against Wake Forest at Commander Shea Field.
