KINGSTON, R.I. - Tony Sanchez hit a three-run homer and Ted Ratliff pitched five solid innings of relief to help Boston College overcome an early five run deficit to defeat Rhode Island, 7-6 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams scored five runs in the first inning off BC starter Kevin Moran, but only managed one run over the final eight frames against three different Eagles' relievers. Ratliff worked five innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts to earn his first win of the season. Nick Asselin pitched a scoreless eighth, and Michael Belfiore shut the door in the ninth to earn his fourth save of the season.
Sanchez went 2-for-5 with a three-run homer and RBI double. Eric Campbell collected three singles, while Sam Shaughnessy and Belfiore added RBI doubles in the win.
The Rams scored five runs off four hits with two outs in the first inning to take the early 5-0 advantage against the Eagles.
BC got on the scoreboard in the fourth when Campbell, Wiswall, Garret Smith and Sam Shaughnessy collected consecutive two-out hits to cut the deficit at 5-2. Campbell and Wiswall each singled, followed by a RBI single from Smith and RBI double from Shaughnessy.
In the bottom of the fourth, URI pushed the lead back to four runs when Dan Rhault led off the frame with a home run to left-center field.
The Eagles scored four runs in the top of the fifth. Harry Darling and Barry Butera drew back-to-back walks. Belfiore laced a double down the right-field line to plate Darling and chase URI starter Dan Rossignol from the game. Sanchez welcomed Ram's reliever Gardner Leaver by connecting for a three-run blast to left field to tie the score at six.
In the sixth, the Eagles took their first lead of the game. Darling led off the inning with a double to left field. He moved to third on a ground out by Butera. After Belfiore was retired, Sanchez smacked a two-out double down the left-field line to give the Eagles the lead, 7-6 and round out the scoring for both teams.
BC is back on the diamond tomorrow in Lynn, Mass., on Fraser Field against Northeastern for the first round of the Beanpot Tournament.
