Softball Loses Series Finale to No. 16 North Carolina

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team (20-20, 2-7 ACC) dropped its final game of the three-game series to No.16-ranked North Carolina (36-7-1, 9-1 ACC) by a score of 10-1 on a raw, cold Sunday at Commander Shea Field.
The Eagles combined for one run on three hits in the game. Senior captain Carley McNary and sophomores Amy Tunstall and Dani Weir each had hits. Freshman Alison Kooistra scored the solo run, her eighth on the season.
Freshman Allison Gage (9-12) started for BC and pitched the first three innings before being relieved by sophomore Taylor Peyton. She then reentered the game in the fourth inning to pick up the loss. Over the 4.1 innings she faced 26 batters, allowed six runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out one.
North Carolina took an early lead, tallying one run in the top half of the first inning. Three more runs scored in the top of the third inning off two Tarheel homeruns. North Carolina broke open the game in the fourth inning, tallying four more runs on three hits, putting them ahead by 8-0.
The Eagles got their run across in the bottom half of the fourth inning. Tunstall and Weir led off the inning with singles. Freshman Irene Delagrammaticas then advanced the runners with a sacrifice hit. Tarheel pitcher Amber Johnson then threw a wild pitch, allowing the pinch runner Kooistra to score, making the score 8-1.
North Carolina added two more runs in the fifth inning. The game was called after BC failed to score again in the bottom half of the inning and the Tarheels took home the 10-1 victory.
The Eagles will travel to UMass on Wednesday, April 9 for a single game against the Minutewomen. The match-up is slated to begin at 4 p.m. at the UMass softball complex in Amherst, Mass.
