Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team (29-28, 5-13 ACC) could not find the offensive spark it needed, falling to No. 20 Massachusetts (34-11, 18-0 A10) by a score of 9-0 at Commander Shea Field Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore pitcher Taylor Peyton, who came in to replace freshman Allison Gage in the first inning, had a sturdy outing for the Eagles. In the no decision, she faced 27 batters, allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six, the second-most strikeouts in a game for her this season.
The Minutewomen broke out with five runs in the top of the first inning. Gage got her 30th start of the season but allowed three earned runs on two hits early on, picking up the loss. Altogether, UMass tallied a five run on three hit inning, taking the 5-0 advantage.
The next run came in the top of the third inning for UMass as the designated player Lindsey Maroney homered in the first at-bat. Peyton then fell into a groove, not allowing any runs to score in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
UMass sealed its win in the top of the seventh inning, tacking on three more runs on two hits. Minutewoman pitcher, Brandice Balschmiter, pitched a perfect game until the bottom of the seventh inning, where she hit BC senior captain Carley McNary in the leg, giving the Eagles their first baserunner. In the end, Balschmiter took home the no-hitter and Massachusetts won by the final score of 9-0.
BC will travel to Providence, R.I., tomorrow for its last regular-season road game. They will take on the Providence College Friars in a single game, starting at 4 p.m. at Raymond Field.
