Softball Falls in Tight Battle with Virginia 2-1

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team (29-27, 5-13 ACC) couldn't complete the weekend sweep of Virginia (15-37, 6-15 ACC) falling in a pitcher's duel, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
Freshman Alison Kooistra highlighted the Eagles' offensive strike on the day, hitting her first collegiate homerun to right field, also tallying her second RBI and 12th run of the season.
Freshman Allison Gage (16-16) remained the Eagles' starter for the third-straight contest, picking up the loss. In seven inning pitched, Gage faced 28 batters, allowing two runs to score on five hits and striking out four Cavaliers. Whitney Holstun (4-13) and Allee Rife split the seven innings for Virginia. Together they faced 26 batters, allowed six hits and one run.
The Eagles took the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning, on Kooistra's homerun. Virginia then battled back in the top of the fourth inning, tying the score on two hits. Both teams remained scoreless through the top of the seventh inning when Cavalier second baseman Kierstie Cameron knocked her second homerun of the season out to left field.
BC was unable to rally back in the bottom half of the seventh inning, allowing Virginia to take the series finale by the score of 2-1.
The team will host Massachusetts in a single game starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30. The game is the second match-up for both teams this season and will be held at Commander Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
