Gage Pitches Two Complete Game Wins Against Virginia

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Freshman pitcher Allison Gage pitched two complete games, lifting the Boston College softball team (29-26, 5-12 ACC) in a doubleheader sweep of Virginia (14-37, 5-15 ACC) Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field.
Between the two games, Gage (16-15) faced 57 batters, allowed six earned runs on 14 hits, struck out four and walked three. On the season, Gage has pitched 17 complete games, has started 28 games and holds a 2.68 ERA.
BC-6, Virginia-2- The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning against the Cavaliers in game one. Freshman Irene Delagrammaticas reached base on a single with one out. Fellow freshman Gemma Ypparila, starting the game as the designated player, then homered for the first time in her college career with two outs, scoring Delagrammaticas. Her homerun also gives her four RBIs on seven hits this season.
The Cavaliers evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fifth inning, scoring runs on two RBI singles. BC broke the tie in the bottom half of the inning, earning four runs on four hits. Ypparila earned her second hit of the game to start off the inning. Freshman Carolyn Jones then moved the pinch runner Allie Thunstrom to second on a sac hit. Thunstrom then advanced to third on another sac hit from senior Carley McNary. Sophomore Amy Tunstall knocked Thunstrom in for the first run on a single, her 21st RBI of the year. Sophomore Taylor Peyton continued the rally with a double, and Tunstall score the second run on an error by the leftfielder.
The Cavaliers then switched pitchers, bringing in Whitney Hulston. In one pitch, junior Renee Ramos knocked a two-run homerun to dead center, scoring Peyton and giving the Eagles the final 6-2 advantage.
BC- 6 Virginia-4 - With Gage back on the mound for the Eagles, the Cavaliers were able to score two runs early in game two. With two outs, Sarah Tacke homered, putting Virginia up 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
The Eagles came back with one run in the bottom half of the first inning. McNary and Tunstall singled to put runners on. Peyton then reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Tunstall to be out at second. Peyton stole second and Ramos followed with a single, scoring McNary, tallying the score at 2-1.
After both teams went scoreless in the third and fourth innings, BC mounted a five run rally in the bottom of the fifth. Tunstall singled for the second time in the game, scoring Booth on the play for the first run. Jones then scored the second run on an error by the Virginia shortstop. With two outs and two on, sophomore Dani Weir homered, scoring pinch runner Thunstrom and Ramos. BC now had a 6-2 lead going into the final two innings.
Virginia tacked on two more runs in the top half of the sixth, but were unable to make the full comeback as BC won the second game of the day's doubleheader by the 6-4 score.
BC will play Virginia in the final game of the three-game series tomorrow, April 27. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at Commander Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
