Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Harvard

Cambridge, Mass. - The Boston College softball team (23-24, 2-10 ACC) kept its bats sizzling, tallying 10 runs on 18 hits in a two-game sweep of Harvard (18-17, 9-3 Ivy) at Soldiers Field Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore Amy Tunstall had a searing day offensively, notching two huge hits. She doubled for an RBI in the first game and had a huge grand slam in the second game, bringing BC back from a 4-2 deficit. Her five RBIs give her 17 this season with 31 total hits. Junior Renee Ramos also remained hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 with five walks. She doubled twice in the first game, notching two RBIs on the day. She now has 46 hits, including four doubles and 33 RBIs on her season.
BC-5, Harvard-3-- Freshman pitcher Allison Gage (10-14) pitched her 14th and second-consecutive complete game in the first win for the Eagles. She allowed just seven hits in the game, with one earned run.
BC scored first in the top off the first inning. Sophomore Taylor Peyton singled with two outs to put a runner on base. Ramos then doubled for the first time in the game, scoring Peyton. Another run scored in the top of the second, coming from senior Carley McNary's single, her first of five hits on the day. She scored sophomore Dani Weir, who led the inning off with a double. The Crimson matched the score in the bottom of the inning off a sacrifice fly.
BC took the 3-1 advantage in the top of the third inning. After Tunstall walked, Peyton tripled for her second hit of the game, scoring pinch runner Alison Kooistra for the RBI. With the triple, Peyton now has 36 hits and 17 RBIs this season.
The final two runs were scored for the Eagles in the top of the seventh. Freshman pinch hitter Gemma Ypparila tallied her first collegiate double to begin the inning. With one out, Tunstall doubled to score Ypparila. Ramos then notched the third double of the inning, scoring the pinch runner Alison Kooistra and giving the Eagles a 5-1 advantage. Harvard added two more unearned runs but was unsuccessful in mounting a comeback, registering the final score at 5-3.
BC-6 Harvard-4 -- Sophomore Taylor Peyton (11-9) started the second game for the Eagles, earning a no decision. She pitched 4.2 innings before being replaced by Gage (12-14), who picked up her second win of the day. In all Peyton faced 25 batters, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out five. Gage faced nine batters, allowing two hits and struck out two.
BC jumped ahead with two early runs scoring in the top of the first inning. Freshman Irene Delagrammaticas notched the first score on a bases loaded single, bringing home Tunstall. Weir then hit a sacrifice fly for the second run, scoring Peyton who reached earlier on a fielder's choice.
Harvard's bats came alive as they mounted four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the 4-2 advantage. They didn't hold on to the lead for long as BC scored four more runs on Tunstall's grand slam in the top of the sixth inning. Her homerun scored McNary, freshman Carolyn Jones who had singled earlier and senior Amanda Booth. The Eagles held the Crimson to just two more hits over the next two innings to complete the sweep by a score of 6-4.
Boston College will travel to Atlanta, Ga., this weekend for a three-game series against Georgia Tech beginning Saturday, April 19. Two games will be played the first day, with the first slated to start at 1 p.m.
