Softball Splits First Day Of National Invitational Softball Tournament

Hayward, Calif.. - In its final spring tournament, the Boston College softball team (8-11, 0-0 ACC) lost to California (16-8, 0-0 Pac 10) by a score of 9-3 and shutout Nevada (12-8, 0-0 WAC), 2-0, at the Alden E. Oliver Sports Park on Friday.
Junior Renee Ramos hit a two-run homerun against the Wolfpack to lift the Eagles in their second game of the day. She knocked in a total of five RBIs in the two-game series, giving her a team-leading 12 RBIs this season Starting the second game, Allison Gage (4-7) pitched a complete game shutout, her second shutout and fifth complete game this season.
Cal-9, BC-3-- The Eagles got an early lead on the Golden Bears, driving in a run in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs Amy Tunstall walked, stole a base and advanced to third on a passed ball. Renee Ramos then singled, knocking in her first RBI of the day. Sophomore Taylor Peyton (4-3) pitched the first two innings, allowing three hits, four earned runs and striking out three. California scored eight runs in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings, giving them the 8-1 advantage. BC scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ramos knocked in two more RBIs, scoring senior Carley McNary and freshman Carolyn Jones. Freshman Allison Gage came into replace junior Savana Lloyd in the fourth inning, pitching four strong innings. The Golden Bears got one more run though in the top of the sixth, notching the final score at 9-3.
BC-2, Nevada- 0-- Freshman pitcher Allison Gage excelled in the circle for the Eagles in their second match-up. She pitched her fifth complete game and second shutout of the season, allowing just six hits over the seven innings. She faced 26 batters total and stuck out one. The game remained scoreless between BC and the Wolfpack until thetop of the sixth inning. Peyton started the inning with a double, her third of the season. After sophomore Amy Tunstall grounded out, Ramos homered, scoring Peyton and herself. The Eagles took the 2-0 lead into the seventh, collecting their eighth win of the season.
The BC softball team competes in two more games on Saturday. They will face Northern Iowa at 1 p.m. and then match-up with tournament host San Jose State at 7 p.m. (All times are eastern).
