No. 19 Virginia Defeats Eagles, 7-3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 19 Virginia Cavaliers (17-4, 3-4 ACC) scored six times in the bottom of the fourth inning to defeat Boston College (9-9, 2-5 ACC), 7-3, Friday evening at Davenport Field.
UVa right-hander Jacob Thompson (3-0) tossed 6+ innings to earn the victory. The junior allowed two earned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts to help Virginia capture the first game of the three-game series.
BC starter Terry Doyle (2-2) was saddled with the loss. The right-hander surrendered five earned runs in 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts.
Kurt Hayer tossed two scoreless innings with four strikeouts in relief of Doyle.
Barry Butera (2-for-3, run scored) and Eric Campbell (2-for-4, double) led the Eagles offense, while Tony Sanchez extended his hit streak to 15 games with a RBI double in the first. Ryan Akel added a pinch-hit home run, his second of the season.
The Eagles pushed across a run in both the first and second innings against Thompson. Butera started the game with a walk, and would later come around and score on a one-out double to right-center field by Sanchez. In the second inning, Michael Belfiore began the frame reaching on a walk. Garret Smith knocked in Belfiore on a single to right field to increase the Eagles' lead, 2-0.
Doyle kept the Cavaliers off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth, when UVa exploded for six runs off three hits. The big blow in the inning came on a two-out bases clearing double by David Adams.
In the fifth, David Coleman plated Franco Valdes on a RBI double to up the score, 7-2, in favor of the Cavaliers.
In the ninth, Akel hit a pinch-hit solo homer to left field to round out the scoring, 7-3.
BC will play the second game of the three-game series against Virginia tomorrow at 1 p.m.
