
Women's Basketball Falls to St. John's, 72-63

Jamaica, NY - The Boston College women's basketball team lost to St. John's, 72-63, in the championship game of the St. John's-Chartwell Holiday Tournament on the campus of St. John's University.
The Eagles (8-3) were led by junior Mickel Picco with 19 points, while sophomore Carolyn Swords added 16 points and sophomore Stefanie Murphy added nine points. BC sophomore Veronica Wilson added seven points off the bench. St. John's had four players in double-figures but was led by Monique McLean with 23 points.
Boston College fell victim to turnovers (20 total) and getting out-rebounded 39-32. St. John's had 15 offensive boards, while BC finished with only eight.
The Eagles fell behind 37-31 at the half as St. John's shot 14-of-18 foul shots. BC played most of the half without Swords and Murphy as both were saddled with fouls.
BC chipped away at the lead in the second half but never seemed to overcome costly turnovers. Swords cut the lead to eight points at 3:40. Picco hit a deep three and BC was down 66-61 at 2:45. BC had two chances at cutting into the lead but again turned the ball over and the lead remained St. John's 66, BC 61. Two key St. John's offensive rebounds with a minute remaining sealed the game for the Red Storm.
Game Notes:
- Junior Mickel Picco and sophomore Carolyn Swords were named to the all-tournament team
- Picco has now hit a three-pointer in 18 straight games
- It was the third game in which BC was beat on the boards, 37-28. The only other teams to beat BC on the boards was Notre Dame and Minnesota
- Boston College will next travel to New Hampshire to play in the Dartmouth Tournament on Dec. 28 and 29.
