Boston College junior Mickel Picco scored 22 points, 12 in the last four minutes to lead the Eagles to a 71-63 victory over James Madison in the second game of the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico.
Boston College opened the tournament with an upset victory over No. 22 TCU, 77-68, on Thanksgiving Day. The Eagles are now 5-1 on the season and will travel to Minnesota to play the Golden Gophers on Thursday, December 4.
Picco went 6-for-12 from the field and was 3-for-6 from the three-point arc fo rher team leading 22 points. She also had three steals and three assists. BC sophomore Carolyn Swords notched a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore Stefanie Murphy added 12 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Whitehurst contributed from the bench as she notched her career-high with eight points and grabbed four rebounds.
Picco hit a three-pointer from the baseline off a timeout at 4:27 in the game. The Eagles never relinquished the lead despite the shooting of JMU point guard Dawn Evans (15-of-29, 37 points). Evans kept the Dukes in the game with her offense as she hit a number of key jumpers. She hit a long three-pointer with 2:15 on the clock and BC's lead was just one point, 61-60.
At 1:53 to play, Brittanny Johnson hit Stefanie Murphy (12 points, five rebounds) underneath and BC extended the lead to three points, 63-60.
Evans missed a jumper and Mickel Picco drove the lane and was fouled. On the play, a JMU player picked up a technical foul. Picco stepped up and nailed four free throws to give BC a 67-60 lead with 1:01 to play. Senior Brittanny Johnson and Picco would each hit four foul shots down the stretch to seal the victory.
BC went from shooting just 33 percent in the first half to 55 percent from the field in the second half. They finished the game at 44 percent.
In the first half, Boston College battled foul trouble as Murphy played only four minutes after she picked up two quick fouls and Swords picked up her third with under six minutes to play.
Boston College was led in the first half by Swords with seven points and eight rebounds. The Eagles shot just 33 percent from the field and missed four of nine free throws. JMU shot 40 percent from the field while causing BC to turn the ball over 13 times.

Mickel Picco has notched double-figures in all five games this season. She extended her three-pointer made streak to 13 games by hitting three vs. JMU ... Carolyn Swords notched her second double-double of the season and now has six in her career .
