Carolyn Swords Leads Women's Basketball Past Holy Cross

Boston College center Carolyn Swords set career-highs with 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Eagles (2-0) past Holy Cross (0-2), 82-69, at the Hart Center on the campus of Holy Cross College last night.
Swords' tied a Hart Center record for most field goals made in a game (15) since 1990. The sophomore was unstoppable underneath as she shot 15-for-17 from the field and 10-for-11 in the second half. She set a new Boston College record for most field goals made in a single game, breaking the old record (14 FG) set in 2003 by Jessalyn Deveny. Swords tied her career-high in offensive rebounds (six) on her way to her high in overall rebounds (15). It was her first double-double of the season, and sixth in her career.
Boston College held a 30-21 lead in the first half as BC shot just 30 percent from the field. Swords only took six shots in the half but made five of those shots. She missed a reverse lay-up but grabbed her own rebound and hit the lay-up with two minutes to play in the half which gave BC a 26-16 lead. Holy Cross cut the lead on a long three by Brianna McFadden and a lay-up by Bethany O'Dell.
The second half Holy Cross started to rain three's on the Eagles. The Crusaders went 9-for-15 from the three-point arc, and hit six three's in the first six minutes of the second half. At that point, BC held a 44-39 lead. The Eagles continued to pound it down low to Swords and Stefanie Murphy (10 points, seven rebounds, four assists). The turning point in the half came when Mickel Picco stopped a six-to-two run by the Crusaders with a long three-pointer at 6:03 in the game giving BC a 13 point lead.
Holy Cross cut the lead to 11 on two free throws by McFadden. Boston College pulled away when Brittanny Johnson picked the pocket of the Holy Cross guard from behind and hit Mickel Picco under the basket for a 75-62 lead with 3:37 to play.
Picco finished with 19 points, while Ayla Brown added six points and six assists. Johnson had four points, and four rebounds along with three assists.
Game Notes:
Senior Victoria Jones earned her first start of the season. Jones went 3-for-4 from the three-point arc which is a new person record for most three's in a game ... Junior Mickel Picco has now hit a three-pointer in 10 straight games ...Sophomore Lauren Whitehurst played only four minutes and had three steals...Boston College will host Hofstra on Thursday, November 20 at 7 p.m. in Conte Forum.
