Junior Mickel Picco and Ayla Brown combined for 32 points to lead Boston College past Hofstra, 71-60, at Conte Forum last night in a non-conference game.
Boston College is now 3-0 on the season and will host No. 15 Notre Dame on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. Hofstra dropped to 0-2.
The Eagles jumped ahead quickly, 5-2, just two minutes into action from a lay-up by Carolyn Swords and the first of four three-pointers from Mickel Picco. BC extended the lead to 17-7 by forcing three Hofstra turnovers and converting on five baskets from five different players.
BC led 39-18 at the half and shot 48 percent from the field. Hofstra was held to just 25 percent shooting from the floor and the Eagles defense forced 15 turnovers. Picco had 11 points at the half, while Swords had 10.
In the second half, Hofstra made a late run by forcing a number of turnovers. With 3:38 to play, Candice Bellocchio hit a jumper to cut the BC lead to just 12 points. Hofstra continued to pressure the Eagles and finished the half out-scoring BC, 42-32. The Eagles shooting percentage dropped from 48 percent in the first half to 23 percent in the second.
Along with 16 points from Picco and Brown, Swords finished with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Stefanie Murphy added nine points and seven rebounds. Brown also added seven rebounds.
Hofstra was led by Ballocchiio with 12 points and freshman Joanne Connelly with 12 points and nine points.
