Boston College snapped a five game losing streak against ACC foe Virginia Tech with a 63-53 victory at Cassell Coliseum. The Eagles last win over the Hokies came on Feb. 16, 2003 at Conte Forum.
Boston College improved to 12-3 and 1-0 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech is now 12-3, and 0-1 in the ACC.
The Eagles were led by freshman center Carolyn Swords with 14 points and six rebounds while freshman point guard Jaclyn Thoman added a career-high 13 points. Sophomore Ayla Brown contributed 11 points, five rebounds and four steals, while junior Brittanny Johnson added seven points and had a career-high seven assists.
Boston College held Virginia Tech to just 18 points and 29 percent from the field in the second half. The Eagles took control of the game with a 14-2 run sparked by four points by Stefanie Murphy, who battled foul trouble throughout the game. Virginia Tech made a final run at BC as the Hokies cut the lead to three points, 55-52, at 5:09 to play. The Eagles gained their composure and went up 61-52 behind buckets from Murphy, Swords and two foul shots by Johnson.
In the first half the Eagles fell behind 7-2 just three minutes into the game. The Hokies went up seven on a Brittany Cook lay-up at 9:56 in the half. The Eagles tied the game at 5:20 on a lay-up by Brown and then took their first lead of the half at 4:49 on a three-pointer by Thoman. Boston College shot 48 percent from the field, while Tech went 12-for-24 for 50 percent and the Eagles were down one at the half, 35-34.
