Boston College senior quarterback Matt Ryan has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Player of the Year in a vote by league media members, the conference announced today.
"This is a fantastic honor, especially since there are so many great players in the ACC," Ryan said. "I'd like to thank the media members for their confidence in me. I'm extremely excited about my senior season and I can't wait to kick things off when camp starts next week."
Ryan, who has recorded a 14-4 mark in 18 career starts for the Eagles, received All-ACC first-team honors in 2006 after completing 263-of-427 passes (61.6 completion percentage) for 2,942 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also ran for four touchdowns despite playing on a broken foot for most of the season. He led the ACC in total offense (242.2 ypg.) and in passing yards (245.5 ypg.). For his career, he has completed 419-of-693 passes for 4,806 yards and 25 touchdowns and is fifth all-time in school history in passing yards and fourth in pass completions (418).
Ryan's selection marks the second time in the three years BC has been a member of the ACC that an Eagle has been tabbed for the preseason honor. In 2005, BC's first year in the league, Mathias Kiwanuka was voted Preseason Player of the Year.
The league also announced that cornerback DeJuan Tribble is a member of the preseason All-ACC team. A shutdown corner and return specialist who has started 27 games in his first three seasons, Tribble received All-ACC second-team honors in 2006. He finished last season with 135 career tackles (112 solos), 8.0 tackles for loss, 14 pass breakups, 11 interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The ACC media members predicted BC would finish second in the league's Atlantic Division behind Florida State, and that Virginia Tech would win the Coastal Division and eventually the ACC Championship Game.
