Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College Softball team lost a heartbreaker 4-2 in the first game of today's doubleheader against North Carolina State. The Eagles led 2-1 through five innings, but saw the game slip from their grasp as the Wolfpack rallied for a run in the sixth inning and two in the seventh.
The game was a pitcher's duel early on, as both teams sent their aces to the circle. NC State struck first in the opening stanza on a solo homerun by Jen Chamberlin. The homerun was the 46th of Chamberlin's career and tied her for the ACC's all-time record.
Senior Britney Thompson led off the second with a single through the right side. After senior Ashley Obrest sacrificed Thompson to second, she moved on to third on a fielding error. With one out, freshman Amy Tunstall singled to center field, scoring Thompson and tying the game.
Thompson, the Eagles starting pitcher, cruised through scoreless innings in the second, third, fourth and fifth. Meanwhile, she helped her own cause with a fourth-inning homerun down the left field line.
In the top of the sixth, NC State tied the game at two on a solo homerun from Allison Presnell. After the Eagles failed to score in the sixth, the Wolfpack went back to work in the top of the seventh. A solo homerun by Heather Gelbard pushed NC State in front 3-2. A few batters later, an RBI single gave the Wolfpack the 4-2 lead.
NC State's pitcher, Abbie Sims, improved to 16-5 in the season, while Thompson fell to 4-6. Both pitchers pitched complete games. Sims was especially impressive, striking out 13 Eagles batters.
The two teams square off again in today's nightcap at Shea Field.
