Baseball Drops Game One to Second-Ranked North Carolina

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Eagles and Tar Heels finally were able to play after two postponements due to the weather earlier this week and second-ranked North Carolina handed the Eagles a 7-2 decision this afternoon in game one at Shea field.
The Eagles would get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs in the inning, Jared McGuire would single up the middle and proceed to steal second base. McGuire would score on a Tony Sanchez double, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Carolina would get the run right back in the top of the second. After starter Kevin Boggan walked the leadoff batter , Kyle Seager would single to center and then score on a double down the left field line by Seth Williams, tying the game at 1-1. Boggan would escape further damage as he retired the next three batters, stranding two runners in scoring position.
Carolina would claim the lead in the top of the third. With two outs in the inning, Josh Horton would single to the left side putting runners on first and second. The very next batter, Kyle Seager would single, scoring Dustin Ackley from second base. Bonggan would get out of the inning striking out Seth Williams.
The Eagles would threaten in the bottom of the frame as Ryan Hutchinson would single to center field, then advance to third on a Michael Belfiore single through the right side. But, Woodard would get out of the jam, picking off Hutchinson at third, and getting Jared McGuire to fly out to center field.
BC would put the first two runners on in the bottom of the fourth as Tony Sanchez and Eric Campbell would both single. But, again Woodard was able to escape as Peter Frates would ground out on a fielder's choice and Jett Ruiz would hit into a double play, ending the Eagles' threat.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Joe Ayers would double to the right side and advance to third the very next batter on a Ryan Hutchinson single. After Michael Belfiore walked, knocking Woodard out of the game.
Jared McGuire would then tie the game with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Joe Ayers. Carolina reliever Matt Danford would get out of the inning getting Eric Campbell to ground out to third.
The Tar Heels would reclaim the lead, 3-2 in the top of the sixth on a Seth Williams single to left center, scoring Josh Horton. Boggan would get Chad Flack to ground into a double play ending the Tar Heels rally.
North Carolina would tack on three runs in the top of the ninth extending their lead to 7-2. With two outs and the bases loaded, Tim Ferderowicz doubled to left field emptkying the bases for Carolina and sealing the game one victory.
