CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Eagles took the field today hoping to salvage the final game of a three game series with second-ranked North Carolina, but dropped a tough 16-5 decision to the Tar Heels this afternoon at chilly Shea Field. With the loss, BC drops to 9-18-1 overall and 4-11 in ACC play.
BC would get on the board in the bottom of the first inning once again. With two on and two out, Michael Belfiore singled to center field, scoring Tony Sanchez from second and giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Carolina, however, would erase the run in the top of the second when Seth Williams hit a home run to left off of BC starter Terry Doyle.
BC would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the frame on a Ryan Hutchinson single. After Rob Anston and Joe Ayers stole second and third, Hutchinson hit a roller to the shortstop, who could not make a play, allowing Ayers to score. BC would load the bases but was not able to bring anyone else home.
The Tar Heels would come right back in the top of the third. Kyle Shelton would lead the inning off with a single to right and would score the very next batter as Reid Fronk would triple to right center, tying the game 2-2.
The scoring continued as Tim Fededrowicz hit a bases loaded single up the middle to give Carolina a 4-2 lead with no outs. The Tar Heels would add two more runs singles by Kyle Seager and Tim Fedroff pushing the lead to 6-2. After a Kyle Shelton double to left center, two more Tar Heels would score, making it 8-2.
With the bases in the bottom of the fourth, Jared McGuire would get hit by a pitch, scoring Joe Ayers from third. But the Carolina bats were too much today as they would explode for eight more runs, 16 in all, on 19 hits of of Eagles' pitching.
The Eagles are quickly back in action as they take on intrastate rival Massachusetts tomorrow afternoon in Amherst, Mass. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
