Boston College head basketball coach Al Skinner will tonight receive the Al Arbour Coach Award at the Nassau County Sports Commission's 13th Annual Award Dinner. The dinner is being held at the Chateau Briand in Carle Place, N.Y.
Skinner recently completed his 10th year as Boston College head coach. He has a 196-120 record at the Heights. Prior to coming to Boston College, Skinner spent nine years as the head basketball coach at the University of Rhode Island.
The award is named for former NHL player and coach Al Arbour. Arbour is best remembered as the mastermind coach behind the New York Islanders dynasty. But while Arbour is recognized as one of the greatest - and winningest - coaches of all time, he is also remembered as the journeyman defenseman who played 19 years of pro hockey while wearing glasses.
Among the other award winners at tonight's dinner is Boston Globe columnist Bob Ryan (BC '68). Ryan will be receiving the Dick Schaap Award as the most outstanding sports journalist.
The Nassau County Sports Commission is a non-profit organization created in 1992 to enhance the quality of life for Nassau County residents through sports and physical activity.
