New Haven, CT. - The Women's Track and Field had a successful weekend, sending a few runners out to the Stanford Invitational, while the majority of the team stayed in New England to win the Southern Connecticut State Invitational. The team placed first out of 11 teams.
Generally, the top six finishers in an event earn points for their team based on order of finish. In the 100 meter dash, the Eagles placed three freshmen women in the top five in the form of Meaghan Callahan (2nd), Miriam Khan (4th), and Teyhanie Boone (5th).
Callahan and Boone also picked up team points in the 200 meter dash, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
Junior Alison Fogarty took first place in the 400 meter dash in a time of 58.13 seconds. Freshman Gretchen Andrus was also a winner, taking first in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Junior Carly Rayburn paced the field in the pole vault, with a victorious height of 3.50 meters. The women also placed first on the 4x400 meter relay.
Other top finishers included junior Jennifer Heyde in the 1500 meter (4th place), sophomore Alicia Henry in the 800 meter (5th), freshman Kelly Gross in the 5000 meter (2nd), senior Brighid Marquess in the Javelin Throw (2nd), junior Stephanie Ho in the Discus Throw (2nd), freshman Rosemary Guerin in the Shot Put (2nd), freshman Caitlin McCann in the Triple Jump (2nd), freshman Melissa Hadfield in the Long Jump (3rd), and junior Tiana Riel in the 100 meter hurdles (2nd). Riel also took third in the high jump.
Out at Stanford, freshman Caitlin Bailey competed in both the 400 and 800 meter runs. In the 400, she finished 13th in a field of 37. In the 800 meter, Bailey ran in what was called the "top section," and finished a very strong seventh of 32 runners, with a time of 2:07.88.
In the "B section" of the 800 meter race, junior Mary Heitkamp finished a very impressive fifth overall, with a time of 2:11.21. Teammates freshman Jessica Driscoll (2:12.44) and sophomore Nichole Lister (2:15.23) finished 14th and 24th, respectively.
Driscoll took 10th in her section of the 1500 meter race. Junior Nikki Tufts ran well in the 5000 meter, taking eighth place in her section, while senior Jessica Flinn took seventh in her section of the race.
The women will be in action again this upcoming weekend at both the Pepsi Relays at The University of Florida as well as the Wildcat Invitational at the University of New Hampshire.
