Durham, N.H.--Ninth-ranked women's ice hockey fell, 4-2, to the fifth-ranked UNH Wildcats on Saturday afternoon at the Whittemore Center, snapping Boston College's three game winning streak. Co-Rookie of the Month Allie Thunstrom played a part in both Eagle goals during the contest.
The loss slips Boston College (18-7-2, 12-5-0) from first to second place in the league standings leading into the 29th Annual Women's Beanpot Tournament being held at Conte Forum on Tuesday, February 6. Boston University and Northeastern will play in the first game at 5:00 p.m. while Boston College will face-off against Harvard at 8:00 p.m. The Terriers and the Eagles will play as the home teams.
The first period was evenly matched between the Eagles and Wildcats. UNH outshot Boston College by just a 12-11 margin and both goalies--Eagle Molly Schaus and Wildcat Melissa Bourdon--held the teams scoreless through the first 20 minutes.
The Eagles took the first lead of the game when sophomore Becky Zavisza lit the lamp at 5:50 of the second period. Thunstrom earned credit for the assist. The Wildcats soon picked up the pace, scoring two unanswered goals during the second stanza and outshooting the Eagles, 18-4. Shannon Clement connected at 13:01 on a pass from Lindsey Caleo and Jennifer Hitchcock struck on the power play a little over one minute later with help from Nicole Goguen and Leah Craig.
Entering the final frame with the 2-1 lead, the Wildcats did not slow down. At 6:56, Steph Holmes notched New Hampshire's third goal of the afternoon with Goguen and Kelly Paton credited with assists. Thunstrom continued to give the Eagles hope when she tallied her 22nd goal of the season at 12:12 after receiving a dish from junior Deborah Spillane to narrow the Wildcat lead, 3-2.
Boston College head coach Tom Mutch pulled Schaus--who finished with 38 saves--with 2:10 remaining in the game to add the extra skater and try to even the score. The Eagles were not successful and UNH solidified their victory with Craig's empty net goal with one second on the clock. With the win, the Wildcats took the season series, 2-1.
UNH doubled up on Boston College in shots, 42-21, holding the Eagles to 10 shots in the final two periods. -BC-
