Providence, R.I.--Freshmen Anna McDonald and Allie Thunstrom each recorded two goals and an assist to lead ninth-ranked women's ice hockey past Providence College, 6-2, in an important Hockey East match-up at Schneider Arena Saturday afternoon. In the process, the Eagles (21-8-2, 13-6-0) became the winningest squad in the 13-year history of Boston College women's ice hockey.
Freshman netminder Molly Schaus played the full 60:00 between the pipes for the Eagles, making 34 saves, including 16 in the final frame. The Friars (13-14-4, 10-5-3) used both of their top goaltenders, Danielle Ciarletta and Jana Bugden. Ciarletta and Bugden combined for 26 saves.
Sophomore Becky Zavisza was sent to the penalty box for elbowing less than a minute into the game, but McDonald scored the Eagles' ninth shorthanded goal of the season 51 seconds into the power play. PC's Jenna Keilch tied the game up at one a piece at 3:03 before Thunstrom put Boston College on top for good at 7:47.
McDonald netted her second goal later in the first period off feeds from classmate Kelli Stack and junior Erin Blood. Zavisza closed out the first period's scoring at 17:37. At the first intermission, the Eagles led, 4-1, and held a 15-9 shots on goal advantage. Providence would go on to outshoot Boston College, 36-32, for the game.
Boston College was penalized for the game's second penalty at 3:08 of the second stanza, and the Eagles would not come away as lucky during this penalty kill as they did on the first. Mari Pehkonen lit the lamp ten seconds into the power play to inch the Friars one goal closer to the Eagles, 4-2.
The Eagles tallied the game's last two goals to prevent a PC rally. Freshman Gabrielle Beaudry drilled her second goal of the season on a 5-on-3 Boston College power play at 8:23 of the second period. Thunstrom notched her second goal of the game and 25th of the season for the only third period goal at :17.
Both squads return to the ice for a 2:00 p.m. face-off Sunday at Conte Forum. -BC-
