Burlington, Vt. - No. 9 Boston College handed Vermont its first Hockey East loss, beating them 3-1 on Friday afternoon. The Eagles improved their record to 5-2-1, 2-2-0 in the conference. The Catamounts dropped to 4-4-0. Sophomore Kelli Stack netted two goals in the game.
Neither team scored in the first period. BC outshot UVM, 6-3, but both teams killed the others' power-play opportunities.
Vermont notched the first goal of the game nine minutes into the second period. Molly Morrison created a turnover and gave the puck up to Kate Lesniak, who scored her ffith goal of the season.
The Eagles evened the score with 1:11 left in the middle period. Junior Meghan Fardelmann passed to freshman Katelyn Kurth who gave it up to sophomore Kelli Stack. Stack took off on a breakaway and registered her second goal of the season to make the score 1-1.
Senior Deborah Spillane put BC up one in the 15th minute of the third period. Junior Becky Zavisza collected the puck after a scramble in front of the goal and managed to get it to Spillane, who popped the puck over goalie Kristen Olychuck.
Vermont pulled Olychuck with 31 seconds to go and Stack nailed the empty net off a pass from Spillane to make the final 3-1.
BC doubled up UVM on shots, outshotting them 30-15. Neither team was able to capitalize on power plays; the Eagles were 0-4, but took 11 shots during the man-up advantage and the Catamounts were 0-3 and only got off one shot.
Goalie Molly Schaus recorded 14 saves and Olychuck registered 27 stops.
Boston College takes on New Hampshire in Durham, N.H., on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. The Eagles are 0-1 on the season against the Wildcats.
