Women's Basketball Suffers 69-66 Loss To UMass

The Boston College women's basketball team fell victim to a hot shooter as Stefanie Gerardt had 20 points, including 15 second half points to help Massachusetts defeat the Eagles, 69-66, at the Mullins Center in a non-conference battle. BC is now 1-1, while UMass is now 2-0. It is the first time in the last six games that UMass has notched a win over Boston College.
Gerardt hit two three-pointers and a 10-foot jumper in the final five minutes of action to lead her team. Her jumper with 51 seconds to play gave UMass a 65-64 lead. A lay-up by Eagles forward Rebecca Miles (12 points, three rebounds) gave BC a 66-65 lead with 37 seconds to play. A defensive breakdown led to Alisha Tatham's bucket and a 67-66 UMass lead with 25 seconds to play.
With 12 seconds to play, BC missed a jumper and fouled Massachusetts forward Pam Rosanio. She stepped up and hit two free throws with 11 seconds to play to seal the win.
The Eagles were behind 31-29 at the half after shooting only 37 percent from the field and 1-for-10 from the 3-point arc. Swords led the Eagles at the half with 10 points, while Thoman had seven points.
The Eagles were led by Carolyn Swords with 14 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore Ayla Brown had her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jaclyn Thoman finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Game Notes: This was the 11th meeting between the two teams. The Eagles lead the series, 7-4, as they had won the last five games ... Freshman Jaclyn Thoman earned her first career start at point guard.
