Boston College senior quarterback Matt Ryan and NC State wide receiver Donald Bowens were named Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Offensive Backs of the Week in the weekly Conference football awards announced Monday by the ACC.
Ryan, who earned his fourth Back of the Week honor this season, led the No. 2 Eagles to a comeback win at No. 8 Virginia Tech last Thursday. In possibly the biggest game of his career, Ryan led a furious Boston College comeback in the last two minutes of play. Playing in a driving rain for much of the evening, the senior Heisman Trophy candidate overcame a stingy Hokie defense late in the game for two scores and the win. His 24-yard touchdown pass to Andre Callender with 11 seconds remaining sealed the victory for his team, giving BC its eighth win of the year. On the night, Ryan completed 25 of 52 pass attempts for 285 yards and two touchdowns for the still undefeated and No. 2 ranked Eagles.
Bowens, who was honored for the first time this year, joined Ryan as Co-Offensive Back of the Week, after putting up one of the conference's best receiving totals of the year in State's upset win over 21st-ranked Virginia.
This week's Offensive and Defensive Lineman awards went to Clemson offensive tackle Barry Richardson and Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry, respectively. Over the weekend, each led their team to conference wins with strong performances on either side of the ball.
At defensive back, safety DaJuan Morgan of NC State earned his first conference recognition of the season, after his big game in the Wolfpack's 29-24 upset of Virginia in Raleigh, N.C.
Rounding out the team this week is NC State freshman tackle Jake Vermiglio and Wake Forest wide receiver Kevin Marion. Vermiglio, who played in more snaps in Saturday's game than in all of the season's first seven games combined, is this week's Rookie award-winner for his play against Chris Long and the Virginia defensive line this weekend. Marion, who leads the ACC and nation in kick return average this week, returned two kicks for 181 yards and a score as the Deacons won their sixth-straight game against North Carolina on Saturday.
