CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team is slated to begin the sixth annual Sonny Nictakis Fall World Series, tomorrow, Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m. on Shea Field.
The intrasquad series will consist of a maroon team and gold team battling in a best of seven-game series. The maroon squad will be coached by first year assistant Jesse Woods, while the gold team will be led by seventh year assistant Steve Englert.
In the summer of 2000, Boston College baseball lost one of its finest former players, Peter "Sonny" Nictakis, after a courageous seven-and-a-half year battle with Hodgkin's disease. Since 2000, the Eagles play an intrasquad series to remember Sonny for all that he did for BC baseball.
Sonny was a tremendous asset to the team during his five-year collegiate career. His leadership and team spirit were acknowledged when he was twice elected captain and received the 1996-97 baseball team leadership award. Sonny made a lasting impression on all those who knew him during his life and continues to do so even today.
The maroon team will send freshman right handed pitcher, John Leonard to the mound, while the gold team will counter with junior right-hander, James MacDonald.
Game two is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 14 at 10:30 a.m. followed by Game three in the afternoon. Game four is slated for Monday and will start at 3:30 p.m.
Next weekend the series will conclude with game five on Friday, Oct. 19, game six on Saturday, Oct. 20 and game seven on Sunday, Oct. 21. Game five is scheduled at 2:30 p.m., while games six and seven begin at 9 a.m. All games will be played at Shea Field.
