CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Men's tennis traveled across town to Harvard University this weekend to compete in the Harvard University Invitational held at the Murr Center. Among the other schools that competed were: Princeton University, Marist College, and host school Harvard University.
The singles portion of the draw consisted of 32 players with the top-four seeded players earning a bye. Senior Soma Kesthely, seeded No. 4, and junior Jason Sechrist represented the Eagles well, as each played their way into the semi-finals.
After receiving a first-round bye, Kesthely handily defeated Harvard's Kieran Burke - who had knocked off his teammate Brian Garber - 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. Kesthely's quarterfinal match would be a tough three-setter against Harvard's Dan Nguyen, but he would hold on for the 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 victory, before falling in straight sets in the semis to the No.1 overall seed.
Teammate Jason Sechrist would win three matches to advance to the semi-finals, before losing to the eventual champion Gideon Valkin of Harvard. Sechrist had no trouble with Marist's Ray Josephs, as he defeated him in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. His next two rounds would be a battle, however, as he went the distance against Alex Vuckovic of Princeton, winning 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and had a tough two set win over the No. 2 overall seed, 7-6, 7-6.
Freshman Thomas Nolan also earned a win in the main singles draw over Princeton's Ted Mabrey, 6-1, 6-2, before falling to Dane Nguyen of Harvard in a tough three-setter.
On the doubles side of action, three of the Eagles' tandems would win their first round match but were not able to advance any further. The tandem of Jason Sechrist and Thomas Nolan would lose to eventual champion Ashwin Kumar and Michael Hayes of Harvard.
The Eagles' next match is Wednesday, February 7, against the Dartmouth Big Green at 6:00 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
