
Women's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker in Virginia

The Boston College women's team battled till the end but could not escape Virginia with a victory. The Eagles (10-7, 0-3) fell to the Cavaliers, 65-63, in overtime at the John Paul Jones Arena.
BC was led by freshman Mickel Picco with a career-high 23 points, while senior Kathrin Ress had 16 points and nine rebounds. Junior Kaydia Kentish added 10 points and senior Sarah Marshall added four points, eight assists and six rebounds.
The Eagles reached overtime when freshman Beth Egnell hit her first shot of the game. The native of Sweden stepped up with two Cavaliers surrounding her, and hit a three-pointer with nine seconds to play.
Virginia's point guard Sharnee Zoll (16 points) opened the overtime with a three-pointer to give the Cavaliers a 60-57 lead. Kentish hit a jumper at the top of the key to keep BC within one point, 60-59. Freshman Monica Wright hit a jumper and Virginia was up, 62-59. Picco tied the game with a long three-pointer but Wright responded from the arc for a 65-62 lead. In the final minute of action, the Eagles only point came from a foul shot by Kentish. BC had a shot with five seconds to go but Virginia tied up the Eagles and got possession on the jump ball call.
The Eagles opened the game with a 5-0 run on a layup by Ress and a 3-pointer from Kindyll Dorsey. The Cavaliers came back with a 10-0 run. The Eagles fell behind 14-9 on a jumper in the lane by Paulisha Kellum. Boston College battled back into the game and cut the lead to one, 25-24, behind a reverse layup by Sarah Marshall at the 3:13 mark.
BC took its first lead since 17:19 mark of the half on a traditional three-point play by Ress. The Cavaliers Brenna McGuire came down and gave Virginia a 28-27 halftime lead.
In a wild second half, Picco scored 15 of her 23 points in the half. Every time Virginia went up Picco found a way to keep the Eagles in the game. Picco hit a long three-pointer to cut into the lead, 46-45, at the 6:34 mark. After a foul shot by Zoll, Ress hit an inside layup off a great feed from Picco and the game was tied at 47-47 with 5:29 to play.
The lead continued to change back-and-forth. A rebound and layin with 28 seconds to play by Jayna Hartig gave Virginia a 57-54 lead. With 9.2 second to play, Egnell hit the three-pointer to send the game into overtime.
