Burlington, Vt.--With Saturday afternoon's 5-0 victory over Vermont at Gutterson Fieldhouse, the eighth-ranked Boston College women's hockey team secured its second straight shutout and third in its last four games. Freshman Kelli Stack scored a goal and helped out on three others while senior defense Jessica Wilson notched her first career goal.
The Eagles (15-5-2, 9-3-0) skated to a slow start not unlike Friday night. Sophomore Becky Zavisza put Boston College up 1-0 at 8:08 but the Catamounts outshot the Eagles, 10-8, in the first frame. Sophomore netminder Johanna Ellison made some excellent saves, though, to keep UVM off the scoreboard.
In the second period, Boston College pulled away with two goals off of 11 shots on goal. Sophomores Brie Baskin and Meghan Fardelmann each beat Vermont goaltender Shivaun Siegl, who made 23 saves in the game. Ellison, who made 10 saves in the first period, turned away all four of UVM's shots in the second.
Stack notched the game's only power play goal at 13:32 of the final frame to make the score 4-0. Wilson, who earned the game's first star, closed out the scoring at 17:36 with the help of Stack and Fardelmann. Stack had a hand in the final four Boston College goals.
Ellison earned her second straight shutout in her third start of the season and made 16 saves. The Eagles outshot the Catamounts, 28-16, on the afternoon.
Only four penalties were whistled for the game. One penalty was assessed to Vermont in each period, while sophomore Maggie Taverna's obstruction-holding penalty in the second period gave the Catamounts their only power play opportunity of the game.
The Eagles remain tied atop the league with the win, and will play a home-and-home series against the Boston University Terriers next weekend. Boston College will try to keep its four-game win streak alive Friday night at 7 p.m. in Walter Brown Arena and then home at Conte Forum Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. -BC-
