Boston, Mass.--Eighth-ranked Boston College (15-6-2, 9-4-0) lost for the first time in 2007 as Boston University handed the Eagles a 3-1 loss Friday night at Walter Brown Arena. After tying the game at 1-1 in the first minute of the third period, the Terriers (14-7-2, 6-5-1) scored twice in the final 1:24 to pick up the Hockey East win.
The Eagles could not find any rhythm and fell behind early in the game. An interference call on junior Cristin Stuart resulted in a Terrier power play goal at 9:01. Sarah Appleton and Sarah Russell worked the puck up the left wing and fed a pass to Nicki Wiart enabling her to blast a shot past Eagles goaltender Molly Schaus from her position right outside the crease.
The Eagles took their crack on special teams with 6:28 on the clock. While on the power play for over three minutes, including about a minute skating with a 5v3 advantage, the Eagles peppered freshman netminder Melissa Haber with shots but to no avail. Boston College spent the final two minutes of the first period down a skater and entered the locker room trailing the Terriers, 0-1.
Junior Deborah Spillane had the Eagles' best scoring opportunity during the middle stanza when she received a pass from junior Erin Blood through the middle of the ice and sprinted up to Haber with the puck, but a hooking call prevented her from getting off a shot. The Terriers continued to kill penalties leaving the period scoreless. Boston University outshot Boston College, 14-13 for the period.
Boston College entered the final frame with another 5v3 advantage and finally figured out the Terrier penalty kill unit. In a scrum in front of the net, freshman Kelli Stack fed the puck to Spillane for her 10th goal of the season. Sophomore Maggie Taverna was also credited with an assist.
With 1:26 on the clock, Terrier senior captain Cara Hendry notched the game-winning goal after corralling Erin Semen's pass and hitting the left side of the net. Boston College pulled Schaus with a minute remaining in the game, but Semen sealed the deal for the Terriers by potting an empty-net goal for the final 3-1 score.
Boston University edged Boston College in shots, 26-21, and each team converted a power play for a goal. Schaus stopped 23 shots while Haber finished the game with 20 saves.
The two teams square off to finalize the three-game series Saturday afternoon at Conte Forum. Face-off is slated for 4:00 p.m.
