Burlington, Vt.--No. 8 Boston College women's hockey (14-5-2, 8-3-0) tallied a power play goal in each period Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse, including two in the third period, to skate to a 7-0 shutout of Vermont. Sophomore Meghan Fardelmann, and freshmen Kelli Stack and Allie Thunstrom each potted a pair of goals, while junior Deborah Spillane also contributed a score.
While outshooting the Catamounts (3-16-2, 1-8-1) 14-5 in the first frame, Boston College didn't get on the board until Fardelmann lit the lamp at 19:09 on the power play. Stack quickly increased the lead to 2-0 less than 20 seconds later.
The Eagles doubled their lead to four goals in the second stanza on goals by Spillane and Stack. Vermont narrowed the shot margin to 13-9 this period, but still could not beat Eagle sophomore goaltender Johanna Ellison, making her third appearance of the season. Ellison made nine stops in the middle period, while UVM netminder Jenilee Roy stopped 11 shots.
For the second straight game, Fardelmann registered a multi-goal game, completing this feat three minutes into the third period. Thunstrom scored her 16th and 17th goals of the season in this final frame, with Spillane credited with the assist on both tallies. Junior Erin Blood also earned an assist on Thunstrom's first goal, while sophomore Stephanie Olchowski set up the second one.
Ten different Eagles recorded a point for the game, and Ellison earned her first shutout of the season finishing with 15 saves. Roy stopped 32 of the Eagles' 39 shots on goal in the game. Boston College has notched a team-high seven goals four times this season, each time against a Hockey East opponent.
Boston College killed all four of the Catamounts' power play opportunities, while converting four of six of their power plays for a .667 percentage.
The Eagles and Catamounts go at it again in Burlington Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
