Volleyball Downs Rhode Island

Kingston, R.I.. - In their final match of the Rhode Island Volleyball Classic, the Eagles again got a strong performance from junior outside hitter Kelsey Johnson and sophomore setter Brittany Pierpont, and defeated the Rams of Rhode Island 3-1 last night at Keaney Gymnasium.
Johnson led the offensive attack for BC registering 18 kills and adding 16 digs. Pierpont continued her strong play tallying a match high 54 assists, giving her 116 for the tournament - an average of 39 per game.
After a tough three game loss earlier in the day, the Eagles got a quick start in game one and took an early 10-4 lead. Leading 13-7, BC got a strong serving effort from senior Allison Anderson and was able to increase their lead to 12 points and pull away from the Rams for a 30-15 game one win.
URI kept it close the remainder of the match pushing the Eagles to a 32-30 game two finish and taking game three 30-25. The two teams exchanged leads early in game four and were tied at 10-10 midway through the contest. Trailing 24-21, URI was unable to cut the deficit as BC rattled off four consecutive points and closed out the Rams 30-25.
Senior middle blocker Ivy Zuidhof led the way for Rhode Island posting 17 kills while senior setter Lindsay St. John registered 39 assists. BC got a strong effort from freshman middle hitter Dana VanVoorhis who chipped in with 14 kills.
BC will look to stay on the winning track as they open their ACC schedule against the University of Miami next Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Coral Gables, Fla.
