Boston College kickoff returner Jeff Smith has been named ACC Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced today. Smith returned five kickoffs for 213 yards, one-yard shy of the all-time BC kickoff return yardage record, in the Eagles' 34-33 double-overtime victory over Clemson. Smith, the nation's leader in kickoff return yardage (42.6), opened the third quarter with a 96-yard touchdown return to tie the score at 17. The freshman from Plympton, Mass., also had returns of 45, 39 and 29 yards.
ACC honors also went to Virginia Tech tailback Branden Ore (offensive backs), Miami center Anthony Wollschlager (offensive line), Florida State linebacker Buster Davis (defensive line), Georgia Tech safety Jamal Lewis (defensive back) and Wake Forest quarterback Riley Skinner (rookie).
The Eagles are preparing for Saturday's non-conference game vs. BYU in Alumni Stadium. Kickoff for that game is set for 12:02 p.m. ESPN2 will televise the game nationally.
Also on Monday, ESPN2 announced it will televise BC's Sept. 23 game at North Carolina State with an 8:00 p.m. kickoff.
