Football Holds First Preseason Scrimmage

Junior quarterback Matt Ryan completed 7-of-17 passing attempts for 79 yards and one touchdown and sophomore running back A.J. Brooks registered 14 carries for 49 yards and two touchdowns - including a scrimmage-high 20-yard touchdown run - as Boston College football held its first intrasquad scrimmage of the preseason at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Ryan hit a diving Tony Gonzalez for a 20-yard touchdown pass and the lone throwing touchdown of the day. Junior Kevin Challenger led all receivers with three catches for 17 yards, while running back L.V. Whitworth caught two passes for 16 yards. Whitworth finished with 19 yards on six carries and fellow running back Andre Callender registered seven rushes for 49 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Chris Crane completed 3-of-8 passes for 37 yards and one interception - by redshirt freshman linebacker Mike McLaughlin. Crane's pass was intended for Trey Koziol and was deflected by freshman safety Wes Davis before McLaughlin picked the ball off.
Defensively, junior safety Jamie Silva led all players with seven tackles. Sophomore linebacker Robert Francois recorded six tackles, including two for a net loss of six yards, while Larry Anam, Taji Morris and Brian Toal tallied three tackles apiece.
Junior place-kicker Ryan Ohliger, who had a 41-yard field goal blocked by junior linebacker Jolonn Dunbar, connected from distances of 27, 32 and 43 yards. Ohliger finished 3-of-5 in field goal attempts on the day.
The team will hold its second of four scrimmages of the preseason on Sunday. All scrimmages are closed to the public.
