CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Charlie Davies registered two goals and one assist while sophomore Mike Konicoff and freshman Chris Carey each scored their first collegiate goal to lead men's soccer in a 4-1 non-conference win over the University of Maine on Sunday afternoon at the Newton Campus Field.
Sophomore midfielder Reuben Ayarna recorded two assists in the win.
Konicoff opened the scoring at 12:25, beating Maine goalkeeper Giacomo Bruino (six saves) with hard right-footed kick from inside the 18-yard box. Ayarna set the play up with a lead pass into the open space. Junior Sherron Manswell also assisted on the goal.
Davies doubled the BC margin with his first goal of the season at 40:40. Freshman forward Mor Avi Hanan got the ball to Davies, who beat one Maine defender and released a low shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the net.
Carey put the host Eagles up by three goals, scoring with a header off Davies' corner kick at the 64 minute mark. The freshman defender cut across the goal crease to meet Davies' kick in mid air and redirect the ball inside the near post for his first collegiate goal.
Maine (0-2) cut the deficit to two goals when senior Cooper Friend ripped a direct kick from 19 yards through traffic at 78:24.
Davies netted his second goal of the game at 88:48 to end the scoring.
Avi Hanan, who scored BC's lone goal on Friday against BU and assisted on Davies first goal against Maine, was denied on two exceptional scoring opportunities in the game. The first came midway through the first half when his direct kick from outside the 18-yard box bounced off the far post. Shortly thereafter, he beat Bruino with a left-footed shot, but the goal was nullified as he was offside.
BC (1-1) out shot the visiting Black Bears, 21-3, including a 16-3 advantage in the second half.
Maine held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Boston College will host St. Peter's on Thursday, Aug. 31 at the Newton Campus Field. Game time is at 4 p.m.
