Boston College junior linebacker Brian Toal has been named to the 2006 Watch List for the prestigious Butkus Award for the nation's best linebacker.
Players selected to the watch list have distinguished themselves as All-Conference or All-America selections from their respective universities in past years. Ten semi-finalists for the award will be announced on October and the field will be trimmed to three finalists in November. The winner will be announced in December at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando, Fla. The Butkus Award will be presented to the winner by the award's namesake, former University of Illinois and Chicago Bears NFL Hall of Famer, Dick Butkus.
Toal, a 6-1, 238-pound linebacker from Wyckoff, N.J., was recently named to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, for Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year, and the Sporting News preseason all-ACC second team. He enters his junior year with 130 career tackles (69 solos), 11.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, three pass breakups, one punt block and one blocked field goal. Last season, he played on both sides of the ball, making his mark as the team's short-yardage back. He carried the ball 21 times for 49 yards and a team-leading six touchdowns, scoring the biggest TD of his career at Clemson to give BC the overtime victory.
Other ACC players included on the Watch List are Anthony Waters, Clemson; Buster Davis, Florida State; Jon Abbate, Wake Forest; Jon Beason, Miami; KaMichael Hall, Georgia Tech; Larry Edwards, North Carolina; Vince Hall, Virginia Tech
