Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College goalkeeper Issey Maholo was named the 23rd recipient of the Tom McElroy Scholarship at the annual men's soccer banquet held in the Yawkey Center.
The award is named after Tom McElroy, a goalie on the soccer team from 1977-80 who passed away a short time after completing a post-graduate year. It is given to the men's soccer student-athlete who most exemplifies hard work, determination and strong character, qualities that Tom was known for.
Maholo led the conference in saves per game this season and is unquestionably one of the team leaders. He is the fourth keeper to recieve the award since its inception, as Brian Boussy (1992), Marc Bala (1995) and All-American Chris Hamblin (2000) have also garnered the award.
The 11th Tom McElroy Golf Classic will be held at the beautiful and prestigious Granite Links Golf Course at Quarry Hills, Quincy, MA, on Monday, August 28 2006. All proceeds from the Golf Classic support the Tom McElroy Fund and the Boston College men and women's soccer program.
The golf package includes lunch, greens fees, cart, dinner and awards. There will also be a raffle and auction. The cost is $250 per golfer, with the number of golfers limited to 144. Foursomes can be arranged per request. Non-golfers are also welcome to attend the social and dinner as well as participate in the raffle and auction. Invitations will be mailed in July.
