Chapel Hill, N.C. - Andrew Miller surrendered two hits in eight innings to earn his eleventh win of the season as North Carolina defeated Boston College, 7-1, in the opening game of a three game series in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Eagles jumped ahead of the No. 5 Tarheels in the sixth when Pete Frates reached on an error and moved to third on two groundouts. Following a Jared McGuire walk, the two pulled off a double steal as Frates gave BC a 1-0 lead by swiping home.
In the bottom half of the sixth, UNC DH Tim Federowicz quickly tied the score with a solo shot to right center. Seth Williams doubled and Bryan Steed was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second with no outs. After a balk moved the runners up one base, Kyle Shelton delivered a two-RBI single, making the score 3-1.
Miller struck out eleven Eagles in eight innings of work as BC starter Dan Houston was equal to the task, allowing no runs through five before turning the game over to the bullpen.
UNC added four runs in the eighth, highlighted by Federowicz's fourth hit, an RBI single to center.
Game two of the series will begin at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
