Chestnut Hill, Mass. - In the final home series of the season the Eagles faced off with the University of Virginia taking the first game, 2-0, in eight innings behind Renee Ramos' second home run of the season and the second game, 5-2. Boston College (21-23, 6-14 ACC) and Virginia (26-23, 6-13 ACC) return to action on Sunday, April 30 for the third game of the weekend series.
After going through two and a half scoreless innings, the Eagles threatened in the bottom of the second frame leaving runners on first and second. Boston College got their first hit in the fourth inning with an Elena Ferrero single down the left line.
The Boston College defense had a huge play in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to preserve the tie. Virginia's Sara Larquier hit a double along the left line and Elea Crockett rounded the bases from first only to get tagged out at home plate as left fielder Kimmy Hopkin threw to third baseman Kristin Allain. Allain made a quick turn to catcher Ashley Obrest who tagged Crockett out at home.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles left three runners on base as the game was headed for extra innings.
Virginia put runners on base in the top of the eighth as Lindsey Preuss singled to left field and Brooke Sorber reached on a fielder's choice. Sorber then stole second, but shortstop Jenna Macchi made a tough catch on the next at bat to end the inning.
In the bottom half of the frame, Allain nearly ended the game with what would have been a home run to center field but Virginia's Jessica Taylor made a catch at the wall. In the next at bat Macchi doubled to center field. With two outs, freshman second baseman Renee Ramos belted out her second home run of the season to right field to win the game.
In eight innings, Boston College starter Amanda Klimczak struck out eight batters, while allowing four hits against 26 batters faced. Klimczak pitched a complete game and earned her fifth win of the season.
In game two, the Eagles bats came alive as they got on the scoreboard early on Ashley Obrest's single to left field. The single drove in pinch runner Carley McNary. It was Obrest's 29th RBI of the season.
Britney Thompson tacked on another run in the second innings with her 10th home run of the season. The Eagles left two runners on base as Amanda Booth had reached base on a single down the right field line and Kimmy Hopkin singled up the middle.
Virginia closed the gap in the third inning with one run on two hits. Jessica Taylor's double to right field drove in Meghan O'Leary. Macchi tagged Taylor out at second to end the inning and prevent the Cavaliers from tying the game.
Ramos drove in her second run of the day in the third inning with a single to center field. Obrest reached home to give the Eagles the 3-1 edge. After Britney Thompson was intentionally walked and the bases were loaded, pitcher Savana Lloyd walked on a full count and Ramos scored on the play.
In the fourth the Cavaliers scored an unearned run as Sara Larquier reached on an error, advanced to second on a throwing error then stole third. Erin Horn's ground out to shortstop drove in Larquier to cut the lead in half. Lloyd struck out Brooke Sorber to end the inning.
Allain belted out her third home run of the season to right center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend the Eagles lead to three.
Savana Lloyd won her eighth game of the season, allowing one earned run on five hits. Britney Thompson came in on the mound in the seventh inning to earn her third save.
Tomorrow's game with Virginia marks the final home game for seniors Kristin Allain, Elena Ferrero and Kimmy Hopkin. Senior Day will begin at 1:00 p.m.
