Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth and Terry Doyle earned his second consecutive win over a top 10 opponent as the Eagles defeated No. 5 Georgia Tech, 5-4, in Chestnut Hill.
The Eagles used some aggressive baserunning to score the deciding runs in the fourth. Pete Frates singled to left and deftly took second on a bobble by left fielder Wally Crancer. Johnny Ayers reached on an errant throw from shortstop one batter later, sending Frates to third. Jeff Schomaker plated Frates with a sacrifice fly to right to make the score 4-3. Jared McGuire followed with a ground out as Ayers drew a hurried throw to third that bounced past Wes Hodges, allowing the eventual winning run to score.
In the top of the third, BC starter Terry Doyle put two Yellow Jackets on via walk and Whit Robbins took advantage, sending his second homer of the series over the left field wall to give Georgia Tech a 3-0 lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the inning, the Eagles stormed back to tie the score at 3-3. McGuire doubled to left-center and Dave Preziosi reached on a bunt single, advancing McGuire to third. Shawn McGill, who had three hits on the day, singled to center to plate McGuire and send Preziosi into scoring position. Ryan Hutchinson drove home Preziosi and put McGill at second with a single of his own to cut the lead to 3-2. Eric Campbell then tied the score with another ground ball up the middle. Jett Ruiz added the fifth consecutive single to right field, but Hutchinson was thrown out trying to score from second, keeping the score knotted at 3-3.
Tech strung together three singles in the sixth and Chris House drove in Luke Murton to put the Yellow Jackets within one run before Matt Meyer ended the rally with a strikeout to end the inning.
Meyer kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard in the seventh and Kevin Boggan shut the door in the next two frames to earn his sixth save of the season.
Doyle evened his record at 4-4 as Boston College defeated its highest-ranked opponent since April 10, 2004 when it downed No. 4 Notre Dame, 8-2.
The Eagles will finish off the weekend series with Georgia Tech tomorrow at 1 p.m.
