Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College staked its ace, Terry Doyle, to an early three run lead and it would be all the sophomore right-hander would need as the Eagles defeated No. 9 Clemson, 3-2, in game one of a doubleheader at Shea Field.
BC came out swinging in the top of the first, quickly landing men on first and second on a Johnny Ayers leadoff single and a Ryan Hutchinson walk. Jared McGuire would follow and load the bases after being hit by a Steve Faris pitch. A Dave Preziosi double play ball sent Ayers home for the first run and a Shawn McGill single gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead after one.
In the bottom of the second, Ryne Reynoso hit a one-out double and would advance to third on a Pete Frates single. McGuire then hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Reynoso with BC's third run.
Doyle allowed only two hits though his first six innings of work, one of which was a solo home run to right field by Travis Storrer, making the score 3-1. For the day, Doyle worked 7.1 innings, surrendering one earned run while striking out six to earn the win.
In the fifth, the Tigers used three BC errors to score its second run of the game as Stan Widmann crossed home on an errant throw to cut the lead to 3-2.
Clemson reliever Brad Kopp held the Eagles to two hits in its final six frames, but the BC bullpen was equal to the task. Matt Meyer faced three Tiger batters, fanning all of them and Kevin Boggan pitched the final two-thirds of the ninth for his fifth save of the season.
