Brockton, Mass. - Duke belted out 20 hits including four home runs to down Boston College, 14-7, in the rubber match of a three game series in Brockton, Mass.
BC starter Nate Jeanes retired the first two batters of the game, but the Blue Devils followed with back-to-back singles. Catcher Matt Williams drove in one run with a double to right-center, putting Duke on top 1-0.
Duke continued to make noise offensively in the top of the second, adding four runs with the aid of a solo blast by John Nicolla, and a two run shot by Nate Freiman, who had two on the day and three on the weekend.
With two outs in its half of the second, BC cut into the 5-0 deficit. Jett Ruiz singled to right and Brandon Ziemann drilled a double into the right center gap to put the Eagles on the board.
The scoring continued in the fourth with both teams adding one run. Duke strung together three singles to extend its lead to 6-1, but the Eagles responded by pulling within four as Shawn McGill scored on a passed ball.
Pete Frates jacked a solo homer to right in the fifth, but that run was wiped out when Duke put together another two-out rally off reliever Nick Asselin, plating two runs and giving the Blue Devils an 8-3 advantage.
The Eagles clawed back into the game in the bottom of the seventh, beginning the inning with three consecutive singles by Ruiz, Ziemann, and Joseph Ayers. Johnny Ayers followed with a sac fly scoring Ruiz and making the score 9-4. Frates then laced a single to center for his second RBI, while Jared McGuire added a ground out to put the Eagles within striking distance at 9-6.
Duke, however, had another answer and pushed two more across in the eighth and three more in the ninth to put the game out of reach, and dropping the Eagles to 15-12-1 and 4-8 in the ACC.
BC will host Northeastern on Tuesday before welcoming the No. 1 ranked Florida State Seminoles to Chestnut Hill for a three-game weekend series.
