Charlottesville, Va. - No. 17 Virginia scored four runs in the fourth, breaking a 2-2 tie and overcoming an early Boston College lead to defeat the Eagles 8-3 in the first game of a weekend series at Charlottesville, Va.
The Cavaliers strung together three singles to start the fourth inning as the ACC's leading hitter Brandon Marsh broke the tie with his single to center. UVA then used two errors to push one run across and load the bases. Tom Hagen followed with a single, adding two of his four RBIs on the day to give the home team the lead for good.
The Eagles jumped on Cavaliers ace Sean Doolittle in the top of the first inning as table-setter Johnny Ayers singled in the leadoff slot. He would advance to third on an error and score on a Jared McGuire groundout for an early 1-0 advantage.
In the second, BC added another run when Joseph Ayers drove in Dave Preziosi who reached on an error, making the lead 2-0.
UVA countered with one run in the bottom of the second, and tied it in the third. The Cavaliers then broke through with four in the fourth to make the score 6-2.
BC's third run came on a Preziosi single in the sixth, scoring Shawn McGill, but the Eagles were shut down the rest of the way.
