Brockton, Mass. - Dan Houston threw eight shutout innings, while Ryan Hutchinson and Jared McGuire powered the offense, combining for eight hits and nine RBI's and lifting Boston College over Duke, 15-4, in game two of the weekend series in Brockton, Mass.
The Eagles started the scoring the second, exploding for five runs with the aid of a Duke error. Eric Campbell ripped a one-out double down the left field line and promptly took third on a failed pickoff attempt that sailed into center field.
After Jett Ruiz was hit by a pitch, Pete Frates reached on an error, scoring Campbell. A Johnny Ayers walk loaded the bases and Hutchinson followed with a double down the right field line, scoring all three. McGuire added the fifth run on a line drive single to left to score Hutchinson.
McGuire, who was 4-5 in the game and a home run short of the cycle, produced another RBI two innings later on a double into the left center gap that drove in Johnny Ayers to make the score 6-0.
Houston needed little support, as he cruised through eight shutout innings of work, allowing five hits and striking out five. He also added an RBI of his own in the seventh on a position switch.
The Eagles added six runs in the fifth, including a two-run double by Frates and a three-run homer to left by Hutchinson, who collected six RBI's on the day and made a dazzling defensive play in the field.
Duke was able to string together four runs in the ninth to escape the shutout, but fell to 9-23 on the year with the loss, while the Eagles improved to 15-11-1 and 4-7 in the ACC.
