New Britain, Conn. - A late Boston College rally fell short as Central Connecticut State overcame an early four-run deficit, scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Eagles 7-6 in New Britain, Conn.
The Eagles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, collecting four runs in the top of the first inning. Johnny Ayers and Ryan Hutchinson singled to start the game. After a Jared McGuire sacrifice fly that sent Ayers to third, Hutchinson was caught stealing, trying to get himself into scoring position.
Dave Preziosi then walked and Shawn McGill followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Ayers. Freshman Eric Campbell reached on an error and Ryne Reynoso drilled a bases-clearing double to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Freshman starter Michael Wanamaker was cruising, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth when the Blue Devils exploded for six runs. After loading the bases and scoring two on an error, John Ramano singled to cut the deficit to 4-3. A Matt Memoli double plated two more runs, and an RBI fielder's choice gave CCSU a sudden 6-4 lead.
Blue Devils starter Hasani Franke settled in and shut the Eagles down through the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh, Campbell's second hit of the day drove in Preziosi, but CCSU put a run back on the board in its half to keep the deficit at two, 7-5.
The Eagles rallied in the ninth, as Preziosi reached on an error and Campbell walked. With two outs, Robert Dittrich pinch-hit and delivered a single to right field. Preziosi scored, but Dittrich ran into the third out trying to stretch his single into a double.
The Eagles will travel to neighboring Brookline to take on Northeastern tomorrow at 3 p.m.
