Providence, R.I.--For the second time in two days, tenth-ranked Boston College women's ice hockey was upset by a Hockey East team. The Providence Friars (7-6-3, 5-1-2) defeated the Eagles, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at Schneider Arena in a rematch of last year's Hockey East semifinal which Boston College won. The Eagles drop to 10-4-1 overall and 5-3-0 in league play.
The Friars pick up two points in the Hockey East standings and move ahead of the Eagles into a tie for second place. Boston College failed to earn a point this weekend in two conference games.
The teams played a scoreless first period, each taking 10 shots on goal. Neither team could convert on its power play opportunities with the Eagles going 0-for-1 and the Friars going 0-for-2.
Boston College struck first at 5:58 of the second stanza. Sophomore Becky Zavisza passed off the puck to freshman Megan Keever for the 1-0 lead. It was Keever's eighth goal of the season and Zavisza's tenth assist. The Friars waited only 34 seconds to even the score at one. Erin Normore and Rachel Crissy teamed up for Crissy's first goal of the season. Providence then took its first lead of the afternoon on Mari Pehkonen's unassisted power play goal. The Eagles edged the Friars in shots for the period, 9-6.
Two minutes into the third period, sophomore Meghan Fardelmann beat Friars netminder Jana Budgden to tie the game at two goals. Eagles defenders Cristin Stuart and Gabrielle Beaudry earned the assists. Providence capped off the scoring at 7:34 when Katy Beach scored the Friars' second power play goal with help from Kathleen Smith and Jackie Duncan. The Eagles pulled goalie Molly Schaus with 1:24 left on the clock in hopes of notching the game-tying goal, but the Friars protected their lead.
The Eagles finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while the Friars took advantage of two of the Eagles' six penalties. Boston College goalie Molly Schaus made 23 stops and Bugden finished with 22 saves. The loss gives the Eagles their first two game skid of the season.
Boston College will recuperate all week before traveling cross town to play Northeastern on Saturday, December 9. The Hockey East tilt, slated for 2:00 p.m., will be the last of the semester for the Eagles. -BC-
