Boston, Mass.--Boston College women's hockey fell out of the rankings after two league losses last weekend, but the Eagles bounced back with a 7-1 win Saturday afternoon over Northeastern at Matthews Arena. Boston College exploded for five goals in the second period, including two from sophomore Meghan Fardelmann, her eighth and ninth of the season.
Boston College found the back of the net first with a power play goal by sophomore Becky Zavisza midway through the first period. Juniors Erin Blood and Deborah Spillane handled the puck before delivering it to Zavisza in the left face-off circle from where she ripped a shot hitting the right post and ricocheting into the goal behind Huskies goalie Sarah Belliveau.
Northeastern converted on a power play at 19:32 with a five-on-three advantage to even the score at 1-1 when Nikki Petrich beat Boston College netminder Molly Schaus. The assists were credited to Lindsay Berman and Amy Goodney. NU held the 12-9 advantage in shots on goal at the end of the first frame.
Immediately after killing the remainder of a power play to begin the second stanza, the Eagles struck again. Fardelmann returned the lead to Boston College for good when her shot from the point hit Belliveau's legs and trickled into the net. Stacey Scott replaced Belliveau in net but the Eagles still scored four more unanswered goals in the middle stanza. Spillane notched her sixth goal, Fardelmann scored a second time, and freshman Gabrielle Beaudry registered her first collegiate goal. Freshman Kelli Stack capped off the period with a shorthanded goal to give Boston College the 6-1 lead.
At 4:10 of the third period, freshman Allie Thunstrom followed up on Zavisza's rebounded shot for the Eagles' seventh goal of the afternoon. Sophomore goaltender Johanna Ellison replaced Schaus, who finished with 23 saves, shortly thereafter for her second appearance of the season. Her previous time in goal was a complete game against the Huskies earlier this season.
The Eagles went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Huskies went 1-for-7. Boston College outshot NU in the final two periods to take a 35-30 shot advantage for the game. Ellison played 13:37 and made six stops while the Huskies' goaltenders combined for 28 saves.
Boston College will not return to action until New Year's Eve to face Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. -BC
