Beekman Receives Scanlan Award; Ryan Voted Team MVP

Senior offensive lineman Josh Beekman received the Scanlan Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Boston College football player, at the team's annual awards luncheon on Sunday. The Scanlan Award is given to a senior football player who best exemplifies the ideals of scholar, athlete, gentleman and friend.
The other awards announced at the banquet were:
William J. Flynn Award to team's most valuable player, as voted by his teammates: Matt Ryan.
Gridiron Club Award, awarded to the student-athlete who displays the determination, enthusiasm and spirit expected from a BC football player both on and off the field: Larry Anam.
Unsung Hero Award, for unheralded achievement and outstanding performance recognized by teammates and coaches; infrequently the "Big-Play" person but always the steady performer; making plays with fundamental football skills and a person whose leadership is found in his steady play day in and day out: James Marten.
Coaches' Award, given to the player who exemplifies the coaching staff's attitude toward the game; a performer whose style of play reflects what has been taught and sometimes what simply cannot be taught; this is a person with great football instincts: Tony Gonzalez.
Paul Cavanagh Award, for the player whose collective on and off the field accomplishments speak volumes about his commitment to balance, a level-headed and realistic outlook on life, and his wholesome perspective on volunteerism, ethics and the community; a football player whose accomplishments on the field distinguish him as an achiever and as a contributor in many ways: Ryan Glasper.
The Jay McGillis Scholarship Award, given in recognition of a defensive back who best exemplifies the personal qualities of team dedication and leadership by example, an extraordinary competitive spirit, and personal concern for family, friends and teammates: Ryan Glasper.
The Special Teams Award, recognizing outstanding play on the special teams; in football terms, sometimes known as the "Big-Play" guy, the kamikaze man; often times known as the heart of the team; this player has great football instincts, speed, and a nose for the ball; he possesses the capability of turning a game around: Johnny Ayers
The Scout Team Award, given to the player who day in and day out walks onto the field to play the game; this player makes the most out of his God-given abilities; he has a healthy attitude and is a leader in a way that only a football person can understand: Greg Anderson and Damik Scafe.
